Nutrition that supports your recovery — not pressure to “bounce back”

After pregnancy and childbirth, your body is recovering while you adjust to new routines, interrupted sleep and the demands of caring for a baby. You deserve a nutrition plan that works with your life, not another source of pressure.

At Karma Clinic in Malta, registered nutritionist Daniel Petre provides practical, personalised postpartum nutrition support. We consider your recovery, medical advice, feeding choices, food preferences and goals. Weight loss is optional: feeling nourished and supported comes first.

How postpartum nutrition can help

Recovery & nourishment

Balanced meals with adequate energy, protein, fibre and key nutrients to support healing and everyday wellbeing.

Breastfeeding-aware eating

Practical guidance for adequate food and fluid intake, with attention to nutrients such as iodine, choline and vitamin B12 when relevant.

Gentle weight management

When appropriate and medically cleared, gradual changes that avoid crash diets and excessive calorie restriction.

Energy & easy meals

Simple meals, batch-cooking ideas and satisfying snacks that fit unpredictable days and broken sleep.

Iron & other nutrients

Food-first strategies for iron, calcium and other nutrients, with medical assessment for suspected deficiencies.

A realistic routine

Flexible plans that account for family meals, personal preferences and the demands of life with a newborn.

What to eat after having a baby

There is no single postpartum diet. A Mediterranean-style eating pattern can be a practical foundation, adjusted for your medical needs and whether you are breastfeeding.

Protein: eggs, fish, chicken, beans, lentils, dairy or suitable alternatives.

Fibre-rich carbohydrates: oats, wholegrain bread, potatoes, fruit and vegetables.

Healthy fats: olive oil, avocado, nuts and seeds.

Hydration: keep water accessible, especially during feeds, and drink regularly according to thirst and needs.

An example of an easy day

Breakfast: Greek yoghurt with oats, berries and walnuts.
Lunch: wholegrain wrap with chicken or chickpeas, salad and olive-oil dressing.
Snack: fruit with cheese or hummus and crackers.
Dinner: baked salmon or lentils, potatoes and vegetables.

Illustrative menu only. Portions and food choices must be adjusted to individual needs, allergies, medical conditions and breastfeeding requirements. Choose low-mercury fish options during breastfeeding.

04 · Gentle follow-up

We adjust your plan as your energy, recovery, feeding pattern and goals evolve.

When is it safe to begin?

You can focus on regular, nourishing meals from the early postpartum period. Intentional weight loss should wait until you have recovered sufficiently and received appropriate advice from your doctor or midwife, particularly after a caesarean birth, complications or when establishing breastfeeding. There is no universal deadline or target weight.

If you experience persistent exhaustion, dizziness, significant mood changes or difficulty eating, speak with your healthcare professional. Nutrition counselling does not replace postpartum medical or mental-health care.

Frequently asked questions

Can I lose weight while breastfeeding?

Gradual weight loss may be appropriate for some mothers once feeding is established, but aggressive dieting can compromise nutritional intake and potentially milk supply. Your plan should be individualised with medical guidance.

How soon after delivery can I start?

Support with balanced meals can begin whenever you feel ready. For deliberate weight loss, check with your doctor or midwife first.

Do I need a special breastfeeding diet?

Most mothers do not need a restrictive diet. Adequate energy, a varied diet and attention to key nutrients are more important. Specific restrictions may be needed for individual medical reasons.

Can I follow the plan if I had a caesarean birth?

Yes, nutrition support can be adapted to your recovery. Your medical team’s advice takes priority, especially for healing and activity restrictions.

Will I need to count calories?

Not necessarily. We can focus on balanced meals, regular eating and appropriate portions rather than rigid calorie targets.

What if I have very little time to cook?

Your plan can use quick breakfasts, simple one-pan dinners, batch-cooked meals and convenient nutritious snacks.

Is the first consultation free?

Yes. Your first consultation at Karma Clinic is free. Any ongoing personalised programme can be discussed separately.

Are online consultations available?

Please contact Karma Clinic to ask about current appointment arrangements.
