A practical approach to supporting liver health

Fatty liver is often discovered during an ultrasound or blood test, even when you feel well. The condition commonly called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is now often described as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Not all fatty liver has the same cause, so medical assessment is important.

Fatty liver can occur alongside insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and increased abdominal fat, but it can also affect people who are not overweight. At Karma Clinic in Malta, registered nutritionist Daniel Petre helps you turn clinical advice into achievable eating habits, alongside your doctor’s care.

How nutrition can support fatty liver

Sustainable weight management

Where appropriate, gradual weight loss can reduce liver fat and improve metabolic health. We avoid crash diets and unrealistic promises.

Less added sugar

Reduce sugary drinks and frequent high-sugar snacks while choosing satisfying alternatives.

Better-quality fats

Choose olive oil, nuts, seeds and oily fish more often, and moderate foods high in saturated fat.

More fibre

Build meals around vegetables, beans, lentils, fruit and whole grains to support cardiometabolic health.

Balanced portions

Practical guidance for carbohydrates, protein and portions, adapted to your preferences and routine.

Alcohol awareness

Discuss alcohol with your treating clinician. Avoidance may be recommended, particularly with liver inflammation or fibrosis.

Understanding fatty liver and your results

Your doctor may assess liver enzymes, metabolic blood tests, ultrasound findings and the risk of liver scarring (fibrosis). Normal liver enzymes do not always exclude significant liver disease. Nutrition consultations do not diagnose fatty liver or determine fibrosis stage.

If your doctor has identified advanced fibrosis, cirrhosis, or another liver condition, your nutrition needs may be different and should be coordinated with specialist care.

Foods to enjoy more often — and foods to limit

Choose more often

Vegetables, pulses, oats, whole grains, whole fruit, fish, unsweetened dairy where suitable, olive oil and modest portions of nuts.

Limit more often

Sugary soft drinks, excess sweets, frequent fried takeaway meals, processed meats and foods high in saturated fat.

You do not need a “detox”

Juice cleanses and liver-detox supplements are not proven treatments. Some supplements can damage the liver; discuss them with your doctor.

Example Mediterranean-style day

Lunch: Chickpea and vegetable salad with olive oil, lemon and wholegrain bread.

Snack: A piece of fruit with a small handful of unsalted nuts.

Frequently asked questions

Can fatty liver improve with diet?

For many people with MASLD, dietary changes, physical activity and appropriate weight management can reduce liver fat. The extent of improvement depends on the individual and any existing fibrosis. Medical follow-up remains important.

Do I need to avoid all fats?

No. The type and amount of fat matter. Unsaturated fats such as olive oil and nuts can form part of a balanced plan.

Is fast weight loss better for fatty liver?

No. We focus on steady, sustainable changes. Rapid or highly restrictive weight loss should not be attempted without medical supervision.

Can I eat bread, pasta and potatoes?

Often yes. Portion size, fibre content and the overall balance of meals matter more than banning these foods.

Should I stop drinking alcohol?

Ask your doctor for individual advice. If you have fatty liver, especially with fibrosis, avoiding alcohol may be the safest recommendation.

Do liver-detox products help?

There is no reliable evidence that commercial detox products reverse fatty liver. Some herbal products and supplements may cause liver injury.

Can fatty liver happen if I am slim?

Yes. Fatty liver can occur at any body size. Nutrition and metabolic risk assessment still matter.

Do I need medication or a referral?

You do not need a referral to discuss nutrition at Karma Clinic, but diagnosis, fibrosis assessment and treatment decisions belong with your doctor or specialist.

How long until my liver tests improve?

Timelines vary. Your doctor will advise when repeat blood tests or other assessments are appropriate; changes in liver enzymes alone do not tell the full story.
