What is the BodyMetrix™ ultrasound test?

BodyMetrix uses a handheld ultrasound probe to assess tissue layers beneath the skin at selected anatomical sites. Unlike traditional skinfold callipers, the procedure does not require pinching the skin. It is generally quick and comfortable.

Ultrasound readings can help show local fat and muscle-layer thickness. The system then uses measurements and calculations to estimate broader body-composition indicators. These are useful for monitoring trends, but no single result tells the whole story about health or fitness.

What can your assessment include?

Body-fat percentage

An estimate of the proportion of your body weight made up of fat.

Fat thickness by site

Measurements at selected locations to compare changes over time.

Fat and muscle-layer scans

Ultrasound views of tissue layers beneath the skin.

Circumference and waist-to-hip ratio

Additional measurements to put body-composition changes into context.

Weight and progress tracking

A record of trends across repeat assessments.

Estimated metabolic rate

Calculated BMR and activity-adjusted energy needs, not a direct metabolic test.

Who may benefit?

Body composition monitoring can be useful if you are working on healthy weight management, building strength, improving fitness or following a personalised nutrition programme. A series of assessments may show changes that the scales alone cannot explain.

For meaningful comparisons, use a consistent measurement method and similar testing conditions. Your results should be considered alongside lifestyle, training, medical history and other relevant information.

How your appointment works

1. Discuss your goals. We start with your weight-management, nutrition or fitness objectives.

2. Take measurements. A handheld ultrasound probe is applied at selected sites. Circumference and weight measurements may also be recorded.

3. Review your results. We discuss the measurements and estimates, including their limitations.

4. Track progress. If appropriate, repeat testing can help evaluate trends as your programme develops.

Frequently asked questions

What is an ultrasound body composition test?

It is a non-invasive assessment using ultrasound to estimate the thickness of fat and muscle layers at selected body sites. Software can use these measurements to estimate overall body composition.

Does the test hurt?

No. A handheld probe is placed against the skin, usually with a small amount of gel. There are no needles or skinfold pinching.

Can it help with weight loss?

Repeated measurements may help track changes in body fat alongside weight, waist measurements, fitness and nutrition habits. Results do not guarantee weight loss.

Does it measure metabolism directly?

No. The BodyMetrix system can calculate an estimated basal metabolic rate, but it does not directly measure energy expenditure.

How often should I repeat the assessment?

The best interval depends on your goal and programme. Repeating measurements under similar conditions can help make comparisons more meaningful.
